Embarking On a New Frontier

June 9, 2023, marked a momentous day in my 17-year career of public service in property taxation. I was ecstatic to learn that I had been chosen to take part in the prestigious UC Leadership Academy, where I could finally learn alongside the very best in my industry. My journey had already taken me from my beginnings as a fee appraiser to reaching my current position of chief deputy assessor. I knew this latest opportunity was going to be a game changer.

Beyond the Ordinary

The Leadership Academy stood out in its ability to address the often-overlooked aspects of our professional lives. It delved into the realm of different career paths and personal journeys, just like the Marvel Multiverse. Instead of merely loading up our toolbox with skills, it challenged us to question if we were on the right path aligned with our aspirations.

Inspiring Encounters

The academy was enriched with captivating panels, and one that truly left a lasting impression featured the remarkable State Controller Malia Cohen, interviewed by City and County of San Francisco Assessor Joaquin Torres. Their genuine and authentic insights into their own journeys were inspiring. Hearing Ms. Cohen's path to becoming state controller, given her previous role as a Board of Equalization board member for my home county, was truly eye opening.

Wisdom from Seasoned Leaders

A panel of seasoned leaders from the assessment world, including Napa Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk John Tuteur, Yolo Assessor/Clerk-Recorder/Registrar of Voters Jesse Salinas, CAA/CRAC/CACEO lobbyist Rob Grossglauser and Shasta County Clerk and Registrar of Voters Cathy Darling Allen, shared their invaluable experiences.

They offered an unvarnished glimpse into why they chose public service and what drives their continued dedication to their field. The revelations about the behind-the-scenes work and legislative process left us all hungry for more involvement.

Top Three Tips for Future Cohorts

  • Set up your office situation before attending to stay immersed in the enriching experience without distractions.
  • Don't wait like I did: Seize the opportunity to connect with your classmates from day one.
  • Relish the social events. Reflections with peers over delicious food are the perfect way to rejuvenate after a rigorous day of learning.

Participating in the inaugural UC Leadership Academy was nothing short of transformative. I now feel equipped to unleash the leader within me, armed with valuable insights and connections from this incredible experience.

Here's to hoping that the Leadership Academy becomes an ongoing annual event.
